Suicide Girls in my London studio, early 2000s - commissioned by The Face magazine to document the first wave of the movement in the UK. Suicide Girls had just launched in the USA that year, and these 11 British women were the UK's first wave, challenging mainstream beauty standards with tattoos, piercings, and unapologetic alternative aesthetics. They all arrived at once to much fanfare - this was their first professional photoshoot and media attention. The energy was intense and celebratory. This was pre-social media; magazines like The Face were how cultural movements spread around the world, and this shoot introduced the UK to a revolution in beauty and self-expression.
This is a vintage one-off c-type hand print from that commission, created for editorial use before digital workflow dominated photography. There's no digital file to reproduce from - what you see is the only version that exists. Hand-printed c-types from this era are increasingly rare artifacts of pre-digital photography, and this specific moment in cultural history can't be recreated. The early 2000s Suicide Girls aesthetic is now vintage, a document of when alternative culture was genuinely alternative.
